Analysis of the types and classification of chips

<

Due to the different materials of the workpiece, the degree of deformation during the cutting process is different, and thus the types of chips generated are various.

Ribbon chip

Its inner surface is smooth and its outer surface is furry. For the processing of plastic metal materials, such chips are often obtained when the cutting thickness is small, the cutting speed is high, and the rake angle of the tool is large. Its cutting process is balanced, the cutting force fluctuates less, and the machined surface roughness is small.

Squeezing swarf

These types of chips differ from the ribbon chips in a zigzag shape on the outer surface, and the inner surface sometimes has cracks. Most of these chips are produced when the cutting speed is low, the cutting thickness is large, and the tool rake angle is small.

Unit chip

If the crack spreads over the entire surface on the shear plane of the chip, the entire unit is cut away and becomes a trapezoidal unit chip, as shown in Figure c. The above three types of chips are only available when processing plastic materials. Among them, the cutting process of the strip chip is the smoothest, and the cutting force of the unit chip fluctuates the most. The most common in production is strip-shaped chips, sometimes with chipping chips, and unit chips are rare. If you change the conditions of the chipping, such as further reducing the tool rake angle, reducing the cutting speed, or increasing the cutting thickness, you can get the unit chip. On the contrary, strip-shaped chips can be obtained. This shows that the shape of the chips can be transformed with the cutting conditions. By mastering its changing laws, it is possible to control the deformation, shape and size of the chips to achieve the purpose of chipping and chip breaking.

Crushing swarf

This is a chip belonging to a brittle material. The shape of the chips is irregular and the machined surface is uneven. From the point of view of the cutting process, the chip has little deformation before breaking, and the chip forming mechanism of the plastic material is also different. Its brittle fracture is mainly due to the stress of the material exceeding its tensile limit. Processing brittle hard materials, such as high-silicon cast iron, white iron, etc., especially when the cutting thickness is large. Because its cutting process is very unstable, it is easy to damage the tool, it is also detrimental to the machine tool, and the processed surface is rough, so it should be avoided in production. The method is to reduce the cutting thickness, so that the chips are needle-shaped or sheet-shaped; and at the same time, the cutting speed is appropriately increased to increase the plasticity of the workpiece material.

The above are four typical types of chips, but the chips obtained at the processing site are various in shape. In modern machining, cutting speeds and metal removal rates are very high, cutting conditions are harsh, and a large number of "unacceptable" chips are often produced. The so-called chip control (also known as chip handling, commonly referred to as "chip breaking" in the factory) refers to taking appropriate measures to control the curling, escaping and breaking of the chips during the cutting process, so as to form an "acceptable" good chip shape. .
