About pig iron

An iron-carbon alloy containing 2% to 4.3% of carbon is called pig iron. The pig iron is hard and brittle, but it is pressure and wear resistant. According to the form of carbon in pig iron, it can be divided into white iron, gray iron and ductile iron. The carbon in white iron is distributed in the form of Fe3C, the fracture is silvery white, the quality is hard and brittle, and it can not be mechanically processed. It is the raw material of steel making, so it is also called steel pig iron. The carbon is distributed in the form of flake graphite, which is called gray iron.
