A survey of 15 steel industry analysts by the Financial Times showed that world steel production will increase by 3.6% in 2014, and European steel production will finally begin to rebound after bottoming out last year.
After six years of continuous decline, European steel production will achieve a 2.4% year-on-year growth for the first time, which will partially offset the impact of China's growth slowdown. China, the world's largest steel producer, is pushing the economic growth model from an investment-led to a service-driven model.
The above survey of 15 top steel analysts shows that China's steel production is expected to grow only 4% year-on-year, down from about 6% in 2013.
Matthew, CEO of Duferco, the world's largest steel trading company? Matthew De Morgan said: "In terms of production, the steel industry has bottomed out and will usher in a more prosperous 2014, but the price outlook is not particularly bright."
The findings support the World Steel Association's prediction that China's steel output growth will fall behind other countries for the first time since 2006.
World Steel Association expects world steel production, including China, to grow 3.5% year-on-year, exceeding China's 3% year-on-year growth rate. Global steel production increased by 3.1% last year.
John, the head of global metals business at consulting firm Accenture? John Lichtenstein said: "This situation is likely to continue for some time. China is turning to a service- and consumer-driven economic growth model, while other emerging economies are tending to grow stronger."
Brian of the UK's Metal Bulletin Research (MBR)? Brian Levich said that in the next few years, new steel capacity growth is expected to come mainly from India, the Gulf region, Latin America and the former Soviet Union countries.
The rebound in European steel production will boost corporate profits, especially for European-based steelmakers such as ArcelorMittal and ThyssenKrupp. Steel demand in the European manufacturing and automotive sectors is weak, and in recent years it has hit European steelmakers.
In recent months, steel companies have become more optimistic about the prospects. Last November, ArcelorMittal’s CEO Lakshmi? LakshmiMittal said that the company's two-year downturn has bottomed out. Tata Steel also reported some improvement.
But top steel industry analysts warned that the steel industry still has some problems that cannot be ignored. These problems will continue to drag down the profitability of steel companies and prevent the steel industry from achieving a full recovery.
Although analysts predict that steel production will usher in a stronger recovery, their predictions are still far from the days of rapid global growth before the financial crisis.
