The subsea sensor developed by MIT is powered by sound waves from the surface

In order to continuously collect information about ocean conditions, scientists have proposed a sensor network that will transmit data from the ocean floor. However, replacing batteries can be very challenging. This is why the MIT research team decided to design the new system.

The system was created by a team led by assistant professor Fadel Adib and includes two main parts: a batteryless subsea sensor and a surface transmitter / receiver. The latter is battery powered and can be placed on a boat, anchored buoy or shore.

The transmitter periodically sends sound waves down to the sensor. This wave causes the piezoelectric material in the sensor to vibrate, producing a weak current. The sensor then uses this current to reflect the modified acoustic signal back to the receiver-it is similar to how existing RFID (radio frequency identification) tags work.

The signal is actually composed of some sound waves, and there are some gaps between them, in which no waves are reflected. Because the receiver represents waves and gaps with 1s and 0s, the sensor can therefore transmit oceanographic data in the form of binary codes.

In the water tank test, the "piezo-acoustic backscatter system" has been successfully used to transmit accurate data of 3KB per second from two sensors with a distance of 10 meters (33 feet) between the sensor and the receiver. The data includes water temperature and water pressure.

Future interconnected networks of sensors are also expected to be used for research such as climate change and long-term tracking of marine life. These devices can even be placed in lakes or oceans on other planets, providing longer-term monitoring than is possible through occasional visits through spacecraft.

"How can you put a sensor under Titan's water, this sensor lasts for a long time in a place where it is difficult to obtain energy?" Adib said. "Sensors without battery communication offer the possibility of sensing in extreme environments."
