Product performance comparison

As part of the evaluation process for assessing and predicting the performance of bearings under conditions of impurity contamination, many bearing life tests were conducted. In order to compare these tests, a standardized method was used for impurity damage. The bearing to be tested is subjected to pre-indentation treatment, and no impurities are added during the test. In Figure 2, a comparison of the product performance of five major tapered roller bearing manufacturers is shown. The test has been reported in the literature and tested on products considered to be standard. For each given manufacturer, the product is manufactured using a common conventional manufacturing process. The coefficient of variation of the test results in this group is 3, and bearing A has the highest performance. Bearings B and E use fully hardened materials and processes. Bearings A, C and D are made partly or entirely of surface carburized parts.

65% confidence band

For the purpose of statistical comparison, the life test results are expressed in a 65% confidence band. The calculation of the width of the confidence band is based on the sample size and the dispersion of the test failure, and it is a function of the Weibull slope. When these bandwidths overlap between test groups, at 90% confidence, it is statistically impossible to make a performance-critical difference.
